Bio

Ruth Stecher (pronounced STEK-er), known as “Rusty” to her friends, was born in the State of Washington and currently resides in Palm Harbor, Florida. She attended schools in Oregon, Missouri, Georgia, Florida, California and New York, and has traveled to Mexico, England and throughout the United States extensively.

Her art education began with Harold Landaker in California in the 1950’s, and continued in New York in 1979 at The Art Students League where she studied with one of America’s foremost pastellists, Daniel Green, and also studied with David Leffel, serving as his class monitor for three years (1981-1983), going on to teach some classes herself. She then opened her studio on Union Square West in New York where she worked and taught privately for 15 years. She moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1994 and stayed for a dozen years before moving closer to family. She has conducted numerous workshops in New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania & Oregon.

In 1981 she became a member of the Pastel Society of America (P.S.A.), where she was a director for eight years and served as a co-chairperson for the annual juried shows. When she began entering national & international competitions she won numerous awards and gained status of “Master Pastellist” within the P.S.A., an honor bestowed on artists who have won three or more awards in the society’s Annual International Open Show.

Her other professional memberships include the American Artists Professional League, the National Association of Women Artists and the Hudson Valley Art Association She is also a life member of the prestigious Salmagundi Club in New York, where she served as the first Vice President (a position she held until moving to Santa Fe) and on the Art Committee.

Ms. Stecher creates her pastels and oil paintings in the manner of the old masters, by north light and never from slides or photographs. She has been represented in galleries in New Mexico, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Arizona, Ohio, Massachusetts, New York, and has shown her work in the Bergen Museum (1987-1989), the Monmouth Museum, the Queens Museum (1985), the Hermitage Museum (1984-1986), in the National Arts Club and Lincoln Center in New York, at an invitational show in France, in one man shows in N.Y., Connecticut & Long Island and in many group shows and exhibitions.
